5-Day Uganda Gorilla Trekking Safari & Wildlife Adventure: Bwindi & Queen Elizabeth NP

Your safari begins with an early morning pick-up from your hotel in Kampala or Entebbe. You'll embark on a scenic drive west, a journey that offers a genuine taste of Uganda's beautiful landscapes.

• Morning (7:00 AM - 12:00 PM): Your professional driver-guide will meet you and provide a safari briefing. The drive takes you through the bustling towns of Masaka and Mbarara. A key stop is at the Uganda Equator for a memorable photo opportunity and the chance to see the water experiment demonstrating the Coriolis effect.

• Afternoon (12:00 PM - 4:00 PM): Enjoy a delicious lunch at a local restaurant in Mbarara, a city known for its Ankole long-horned cattle. Continue your drive, passing through the rolling hills of the Kigezi highlands. You'll enter Queen Elizabeth National Park via the northern gate.

• Evening (5:00 PM - 7:00 PM): After checking into your lodge, you'll set out for an introductory evening game drive. Explore the Kasenyi plains, a prime area for spotting large herds of Uganda kob, African buffalo, and elephants. Keep your eyes peeled for predators like lions and spotted hyenas as they begin their nocturnal hunting.

Today is dedicated to experiencing the rich biodiversity of Queen Elizabeth National Park through two classic safari activities.

• Early Morning (6:30 AM - 10:00 AM): Wake up early for a morning game drive. As the sun rises, the park comes alive. Your guide will navigate the tracks of the Kasenyi plains, searching for lions, leopards, and hyenas. You'll also witness large herds of elephants, warthogs, and defassa waterbuck. The morning light is perfect for photography.

• Midday (10:00 AM - 3:00 PM): Return to your lodge for a late, hearty breakfast and some relaxation time to beat the midday heat. Enjoy lunch and perhaps take a dip in the pool if your lodge has one.

• Afternoon (3:00 PM - 5:00 PM): Head to the jetty for a 2-hour Kazinga Channel boat cruise. This channel connects Lake Edward and Lake George and is a haven for wildlife. You will get within meters of massive pods of hippos, spot Nile crocodiles basking on the banks, and see elephants and buffaloes coming down to drink. Birdwatchers will be delighted by the prolific birdlife, including African fish eagles, kingfishers, and saddle-billed storks.

• Evening: Return to your lodge for dinner and overnight.

Today you'll travel from the savanna to the jungle, with a prime opportunity to see one of Uganda's most sought-after wildlife spectacles.

• Morning (8:00 AM - 12:00 PM): After breakfast, you will check out and begin your drive south towards Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. You will traverse the southern sector of Queen Elizabeth, known as Ishasha.

• Midday (12:00 PM - 2:00 PM): Ishasha is world-famous for its tree climbing lions. Your driver-guide will navigate the tracks, scanning the large fig and acacia trees for these majestic cats lounging on the branches. This is a unique sighting that few places in Africa can offer. You'll enjoy a picnic lunch in the bush, keeping an eye on the surroundings.

• Afternoon (2:00 PM - 5:00 PM): Continue your journey through the lush, terraced hills of Kigezi, often referred to as the "Switzerland of Africa." You will arrive at your lodge in Bwindi, nestled on the edge of the impenetrable forest.

• Evening: Settle in for a briefing on the next day's gorilla trek. Relax and absorb the cool, fresh air of the mountain forest.

  • Mid-Range: Buhoma Haven Lodge or Gorilla Mist Camp (Lodge).

• Early Morning (6:30 AM - 7:30 AM): Have an early breakfast and prepare your daypack with water, snacks, and rain gear. You will be transferred to the park headquarters for your sector (Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, or Nkuringo, determined by permit availability).

• Morning (7:45 AM - 3:00 PM): Join a briefing by the Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers. You will be allocated to a specific gorilla family group. The trek, led by expert trackers, takes you into the forest to locate the group. The terrain can be steep, and the vegetation dense. Once the gorillas are found, you will have a magical one hour to observe them in their natural habitat—watching them play, feed, and care for their young. This intimate encounter is an unparalleled wildlife experience.

• Afternoon (3:00 PM onwards): After descending from the forest, you will return to your lodge to relax. In the late afternoon, you have the option to take a gentle community walk, visiting the local people who live alongside the forest. This is a wonderful way to learn about their culture, traditions, and conservation efforts.

• Accommodation & Meals: Same lodge as Day 3.

Depending on your preference for a scenic drive or a quick flight, your final day can be tailored.

• Morning (7:00 AM - 9:00 AM): Enjoy a leisurely breakfast at your lodge, reflecting on your incredible gorilla encounter.

• Option 1: Road Transfer (8:00 AM - 5:00 PM): You will begin your journey back to Kampala/Entebbe. The drive is approximately 8-9 hours, with a stop for lunch in Mbarara and a final photo opportunity at the Equator. You will be dropped off at your hotel or Entebbe International Airport in the late afternoon.

• Option 2: Fly-in Safari Departure: For those on a fly-in itinerary, your guide will transfer you to the nearby airstrip (Kihihi or Kisoro) for your scheduled domestic flight back to Entebbe. Upon arrival, a representative will meet you for your transfer to the international airport for your connecting flight home.
